First impressions

I came across a trailer for the movie called Jojo Rabbit directed by Taika Waititi. He is a well-known director and actor. He is most recently recognized for his directing of the film Thor: Ragnarok.

Jojo Rabbit stars Taika Waititi, Scarlett Johansson, Rebel Wilson, Sam Rockwell, Thomasin McKenzie and Roman Griffin Davis. When I saw this amazing cast, I was instantly inclined to see what this film was all about and how these talented actors could bring humour and heartfelt moments in a dark time in history to the movie screen.

A whole lot of surprises (for me)

This movie is about a child named Jojo Betzler (a child of the Hitler Youth), his mother (a member of the Nazi resistance) and a Jewish child that Jojo’s mother is hiding in their house.  When I watched this trailer I was a little confused. I thought that this kid was ACTUALLY friends with Hitler! Then I watched another video where the director and actors were being interviewed about the movie and explaining that Hitler was this boy’s imaginary friend. This was a twist for me, even though it was on the TIFF 2019 website movie details page which I missed somehow.

The trailer revealed it was a funny movie! BUT I also could feel the emotion and love behind the humour. And if you know me at all, I love a good film with layers (like an onion!).

Either way, I am stoked to see this one. After doing a little more research I realized it’s in theatres. I am 100 per cent going to watch this.

The feels

One thing that stuck with me that Taika Waititi said in context for the purpose of this movie was: “I just want people to be more tolerant. Spread more love and less hate.”

I can’t agree more, and I’m curious how this movie will depict his sentiment.
