I absolutely love Halloween. It is my favourite time of the year so I thought it would be great to see a movie that fit the theme of the season.

I decided to buy a ticket for The Lighthouse starring Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe. The movie grasped my interest because of its simple title and with the fact that it was filmed in black and white. After checking Rotten Tomatoes for an idea on what critics felt about the film, I was sold on it!

Synopsis

It began with two men – one man named Thomas Wake and the other, Ephraim Winslow – reaching the island upon which they were to spend several weeks tending to the lighthouse. As time goes on it is evident that both characters begin to lose their minds, slowly but surely. They rag on each other the entire movie until the end.

My Experience and Review

I have to admit that for quite a bit of the movie I had no idea what they were saying, and I had to do some technical lip-reading to gain understanding. I also couldn’t help laughing at scenes that were just so absurd and unexpected! Between the random scenes with screaming matches among the characters, mythical creatures, seagulls, obsession with the lighthouse and the ongoing storm at sea – I think it was a really interesting movie.

It kept me watching closely, not wanting to lose a second because I knew that if I did I’d be lost. I definitely didn’t want that to happen considering I was multi-tasking eating my theatre food, lip-reading and fighting the temptation to turn to my sister and friend to see their reaction to what was happening on the screen.

The ending is one I can’t give away. I encourage you to see this movie and comment on your thoughts. It was surprisingly thrilling and ironic. Disclaimer: this review had nothing to do with my small infatuation with Robert Pattinson being so dreamy.

With that said, go see the movie at a theatre near you!
