The movie starts with Cecilia Kass (Elisabeth Moss), the abused wife of an optics scientist named Adrian Griffin (Oliver Jackson-Cohen). She escapes from her home in the middle of the night by drugging her husband with diazepam, a drug meant to keep him asleep. As she is about to leave the house, she is faced by her dog who then sets off an alarm by accident. She flees to the main street to see her sister Emily Kass (Harriet Dyer) and jumps in the car. Her husband pursues her, but she leaves right in time, unknowingly dropping the diazepam drug bottle.

She stays with her best friend James Lanier (Aldis Hodge) and his daughter Sydney (Storm Reid), and for two weeks she does not leave the house in fear of her husband finding her. One day her sister Emily arrives at the house to tell Cecilia that Adrian has committed suicide and has left her a fortune on the condition that she does not commit a felony.

She begins to feel as though she is being watched. One night when sleeping with Sydney, the comforter begins to be pulled off the bed. As she goes to bring the comforter back to the bed, they can’t be moved and she sees footprints. She screams and James runs into the room. Both he and Sydney do not believe her and chalk it up to her paranoia and anxiety surrounding her late husband Adrian.

Cecilia attends a job interview where she finds her portfolio work missing, faints and goes to the hospital. When she returns home, she receives a call from the hospital telling her that she was drugged with diazepam. As she is being told this information, she sees the same diazepam bottle from the night she escaped on her sink.

She goes to visit her sister, who is upset with her over an angry email Cecilia supposedly sent her. Cecilia goes home to find the email in her outbox, and has a breakdown. Sydney enters the room and tries to comfort her when she suddenly gets pushed aside by an unseen force. She believes it is Cecilia who hit her and James takes Sydney somewhere safe.

Cecilia then takes this moment to investigate the house and finds her portfolio work, photos, a knife and a phone. She feels she is not alone and throws white paint at the force. She sees the shape of a man leave the attic and she follows the paint on the floor. She gets attacked by the force who she believes is a man in a suit and manages to fight him off.

She takes an Uber to return to her house and she finds an invisible suit. She takes the suit and hides it. The invisible man attacks her again but she escapes with the help of her dog. She calls and meets up with her sister to apologize and tell her about the suit when suddenly Emily’s throat has been slit and the knife is placed in Cecilia’s hand. She is arrested and put in a facility.

She is told by the nurses that she is pregnant, which is a shock to her since she was avoiding pregnancy all the time she was with Adrian. Tom (Michael Dorman), Adrian’s brother, visits her and tells her that Adrian is, in fact, alive and she can avoid being admitted into the institution permanently if she does not return to Adrian with his child. She is given three days to decide, and she steals one of his pens.

In her room she uses the pen to slit her wrist, and as she begins to do so, she is stopped by the invisible man. She stabs him multiple times with the pen which causes his suit to malfunction and be seen. The invisible man kills many security guards and tells Cecilia that he will now kill Sydney. Cecilia calls James and warns him about the invisible man going after Sydney. As he tries to defend her the invisible man knocks him down. Cecilia gets there in time to kill the invisible man, but when she takes off the mask, the man underneath is Tom.

Adrian is found tied up and concealed in the basement of the house. Cecilia knows that Tom was set up and she agrees to meet with Adrian in their home. She tries to get him to admit his guilt while James listens through a wire outside the property but he denies it. She goes to the washroom. While Adrian is waiting, his head is suddenly pulled back and his throat is slit. Cecilia returns to the room and acts shocked and makes a panicked call to the police. She infers that she used the suit to kill him and leaves the house. James sees that she planned this murder and lets her go. The movie ends with Cecilia leaving the house with a slight smile on her face. See this article for the ending further explained!

My Review:

I went to see this movie in theatres. It did not disappoint. I was very happy with the storyline and the acting. There were so many moments of intense suspense and although I knew there were going to be jump-scares, I was still hooked with what was going to happen.

What I liked about the movie was the sudden plot twists. The times where the invisible man would make an “appearance” were not anticipated. These times included when the knife was moving, the stove was set on fire, when Sydney was pushed, and even when he was stalking Cecilia while she was asleep.

Elizabeth Moss’ performance was stellar since she had to act as though she was fighting with an actual person, when in fact, she had to pretend that someone was there! I think it shows a lot in regards to her skills in acting. Her character was also an abused woman. I think the way she portrayed the fear, paranoia and anxiety around seeing her abuser again was very believable and intense.

I think this movie was really interesting and kept me on the edge of my seat. I hope people consider watching it for the thrill and to see how the movie unfolds!
