This year has been a tough one. It has become especially difficult since the outbreak of Coronavirus (COVID-19). Due to the pandemic, almost everyone is doing their best to prevent the spread of the sickness by being in self-isolation or quarantine. Despite the unfortunate events, this is the best time to catch up on some movies and TV series! I wanted to share some of my favourite movies that I like to watch on rainy days. I don’t want to give details about the plots. You just have to watch them!

Harry Potter saga (1-8)

You have not lived life if you have not watched these movies. A story about the wizarding world, magical creatures, the battle between good and evil, the power of love and everlasting friendship. If that does not convince you to engage in a Harry Potter movie marathon, I don’t know what will!

Hereditary

This is probably one of the best scary movies ever made. When I say scary, I mean scary. The continuous tension, the sudden plot twists and the petrifying scenes really make this movie one that you will not stop thinking about for days. Watch this movie if you dare!

Melancholia

This movie may not be what you expect. It is about a sad woman and her premonitions. The movie also has the best orchestra music I have ever heard: Tristan and Isolde by Richard Wagner. Check out this movie if you love movies over two hours long–I sure do.

28 Weeks Later

Who doesn’t love a good zombie movie? I love this one so much that I’ve watched it maybe a million times. I think the best thing about this movie is the number of ethical dilemmas people in a zombie apocalypse have to deal with. Watch this movie if you like a little drama and scare!

Train to Busan

This is one of the best zombie movies ever. I find that international films really push the limit with the scare factor. Imagine you buy a ticket for a seat on a train, without realizing that you bought a ticket to save yourself and those around you from a zombie outbreak. Get your ticket for this scary ride!

The Babadook

Don’t let this movie title confuse you. It sounds like gibberish, but it’s actually the name of the scariest monster you’ll ever see on screen. I promise you will also see this monster everywhere you go in your normal day-to-day. I hope the warning of lingering fear doesn’t deter you from watching this movie!

Coraline

Are you an adult who loves cartoons? This movie is for you. It’s considered to be a film for children, so I hope you don’t get too scared! It’s one of the most eerie and interesting stories I have ever seen. If you want to experience something that’s scary for children and adults alike, watch Coraline!

Unicorn Store

This movie is a quirky comedy and drama. It’s about a girl who’s failed art school and gets a job at a public relations firm. Her dream is to adopt a unicorn and she prepares for its arrival. The movie shows her journey from failing to accepting and loving herself. I have to admit it reminds me so much of my emotional journey and dreams that I have for myself. I hope you give this movie a chance, and see if it touches your heart the same way it did mine.

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World

This has to be one of the most tragically heart-warming movies. It really makes you think about what you would do if the end of the world was only a few days away. I’m also a sucker for a good love story, and this is one that makes my heart melt and bring tears to my eyes. If this is what you like to feel like at the end of a movie, then check it out!

I realize that a lot of these movies are about an impending doom and horror, but I promise they will keep your mind occupied! These are, of course, suggestions. Watch what you are most interested in! The best thing about movies is that they can take us to places we can’t go to on our own. They help us forget about the issues we may be facing for a few hours, and take us on a journey. It’s very important to take care of your mental health!

As a reminder during these complicated and dark times, remember that when you wash your hands, self-isolate and maintain awareness of any symptoms, you are helping save lives and prevent the spread of COVID-19. Stay safe everyone!
