Before watching a movie, I never look at reviews. Shocking, I know! A lot of people I know love to read reviews prior to a watching a movie to see how well it was received or not. This aids in their decision to watch a movie or not, and if it is worth their money.
If I happen to hear about a movie through word of mouth or come across a review while scouring the internet, it discourages me from seeing the movie! I feel like I’ve already seen it, but through someone else’s eyes. My preference is to make the experience of watching a movie feel genuinely new with no biases.
Alternatively, I like to see reviews after the movie. I do this to understand different aspects of the movie or see alternative interpretations of the message the movie is trying to convey. I like to take this a step further and watch YouTube Channels that review a movie in a creative and entertaining way.
Screen Junkies: Honest Trailers
Screen Junkies is a group of people who started their YouTube Channel back in October 3, 2008. They are situated in Los Angeles in the United States and have a variety of series and content including pop-culture parody, original series and thoughtful commentary.

My favourite series on their channel is Honest Trailers. Screen Junkies takes the movie trailer and make a hilarious parody. They reveal spoilers, but it is all in good fun! They break down the movie in a way that states the obvious movie scenes that make no sense and those that were unnecessary. They even have the directors of these blockbuster movies react and review their honest trailers for the movies they created! It becomes more fun when people can laugh at their own work and be a good sport.
My favourite Honest Trailer is IT Chapter Two. I was a fan of IT, but IT Chapter Two was extremely disappointing. It was too long, cheesy, unfunny, repetitive and boring. After leaving the theatre, I needed a pick-me-up. Honest Trailers made a hilarious parody of the movie and touched on everything I was thinking during the movie.
Screen Rant: Pitch Meetings
Screen Rant is one of the top movie related channels on YouTube. They joined on August 18, 2008. They upload videos daily and have movie theories which are really fun to listen to for huge movies. It helps build the hype for any upcoming movies. They also collaborate with studios including Disney, Warner Brothers and Marvel.

I personally love their series called Super Easy, Barely an Inconvenience–Screen Rant Pitch Meetings. They do things a little differently and they’re hilarious! Their videos include a screen writer and a movie producer. The screen writer is pitching to the movie producer on what movie he has written to get it to the big screen. In the process, he explains his vision and storyline of the movie (spoilers included). They have an entertaining back-and-forth and you start to understand how they bring to light the ridiculous in movies in a humourous and clean manner. The best part is that there are parts in the movie that need some extreme problem-solving, and somehow it gets solved “super easily, barely an inconvenience!”. I absolutely love the concept!
My favourite video of theirs is for IT Chapter Two. (I’m guessing you can tell which was my least favourite movie of 2019). That movie was just terrible. I loved how the Screen Rant writer addressed all the questions that were left on my mind when I left the theatre. The best part of this video (and the series) is that the movie producer challenges the writer on his ideas for the movie, and his responses are hilarious, and some of the answers aren’t answers at all!
I hope that you enjoy these two channels and their content! It just so happened that my two favourite videos from each of these channels are for the same movie, but it demonstrates the unique angle that each of these channels take in their movie review process. Check out their channels and I hope you laugh along the way!
